The Saddest “Tail” of All

Maisie (aka The Fatdog) April 2003 – July 2012

We thought that her slowing up was down to age, mild arthritis and her annual summer protest at walks in the sun.  Sadly that wasn’t the case; it proved to be non-regenerative anaemia.  From mid June there was a steady decline in her energy levels and on the 17th July there was no alternative but to allow her to sleep for the final time.

Maisie’s great ability was to make people smile as she ambled up to them, tail gently wagging…even those not accustomed to dogs were pleased to see her.  The world has lost one of its gentlest creatures and even the sky cried heavy rain for over 24 hours at her passing.

  1. So sorry to hear your sad news Ken. I lost my fourteen and a half year old Alsatian about ten years ago and found it very hard to deal with. :-(

  2. Sair yin, Ken. I’ve had to come home with the lead and the empty collar a few times.Just takes time.

  3. How sad. I shall raise a glass to her life and to the smiles she caused. And perhaps a sandwich. She’d like that:

  4. I am so sorry. It’s part of yourself that’s suddenly missing.

  5. I’m not a mystic, but in my personal recent history, June 17 and July 17 are significant dates. Clay passed June 17, July 17 was my birthday, and now Maizie has chosen her
own special date to coincide with one of mine. Having lost several four-legged family members to old age infirmities, I know only too well the grieving that follows. Do I dare say such grieving sometimes surpasses all others…. in some ways it does. Thank you for sharing Maisie with us.

  6. I’m not sure what to say, Ken. I just want you to know that I’m feeling for you.

  8. I’m really sorry to hear about Maisie, I was never fortunate enough to meet her but I feel as though I’ve lost a friend.

  9. So sorry to hear the sad news Ken.
Maisie was obvously a bit of a Character and will be sadly missed.
I’m sure you will have many fond memories to look back on, some of which you have kindly shared here on your blog.

  10. I’m truly vexed to hear that news, Ken. Not that it needs saying of course, but she had a fantastic life with you, which is awful important.

  11. Hi Ken,
Sorry to hear of Maisie’s passing. I always looked forward to reading the latest FatDog tale. May she walk in peace.

  12. I’m so sorry and saddened to hear that news Ken. Having lost my own much loved Harry over 10 years ago I know how you must be feeling right now. She clearly had a great life, sharing your adventures and I hope that those fantastic memories provide you with some smiles through the hard times.

It’s strange that even though I never met Maisie I feel like I’ve lost a friend too. Your stories always brought a smile to my face and her memory will always live on through the blog.

  13. Oh, Ken, I’m so sorry to hear this news.I’ve followed her (and your) exploits with interest – and a good chuckle on many occasions – over the years and know she will be very much missed.

  14. So sorry to read this news, Ken – Maisie had many fans.

    • Thanks Phil…I’ve discovered that so many people read about her adventures over the years and now feel sad that I can’t produce any more for people to read. It had to end sometime…it was just a surprise it was so soon.
